Presupernova evolution and explosion of massive stars with mass loss
We review the main properties of solar metallicity massive stars in the range 11-120 M⊙. The influence of the mass loss on the hydrostatic burning stages as well as the final explosion is discussed in some detail. We find that the minimum masses that enter the WNL, WNE and WC stages are 30 M⊙, 35 M⊙ and 40 M⊙ respectively; the limiting mass between stars exploding as SNII and SNIb/c is between ...
متن کاملEvolution and Explosion of Very Massive Primordial Stars
While the modern stellar IMF shows a rapid decline with increasing mass, theoretical investigations suggest that very massive stars (& 100M⊙) may have been abundant in the early universe. Other calculations also indicate that, lacking metals, these same stars reach their late evolutionary stages without appreciable mass loss. After central helium burning, they encounter the electron-positron pa...
متن کاملLong-rising Type II supernovae from PTF and CCCP
Context. Supernova (SN) 1987A was a peculiar hydrogen-rich event with a long-rising (∼ 84 d) light curve, stemming from the explosion of a compact blue supergiant star. Only a few similar events have been presented in the literature in recent decades. Aims. We present new data for a sample of six long-rising Type II SNe (SNe II), three of which were discovered and observed by the Palomar Transi...
متن کاملEvolution of the Most Massive Stars
We discuss the physics of the ΩΓ– Limit, i.e. when the star is unbound as a result of both rotation and radiation pressure. We suggest that the ΩΓ– Limit is what makes the Humphreys–Davidson Limit. Stellar filiations are discussed, with an emphasis on the final stages, in particular on the final masses, their angular momentum and the chemical yields with account of rotation. A possible relation...
